Mounssif Bouhlaoui, a 30-year-old Tangier native, graduated from the ALX Software Engineering programme with a focus on back-end web development. He joined ALX in February 2023, bringing with him a background as an automation industrial engineer and experience developing software applications. Importantly, software engineering was not his primary area of expertise.

Mounssif’s fascination with tech began at a young age, fueled by an insatiable curiosity and desire to understand how computers work. Little did he know that this early interest would develop into a lifelong passion and lead him on a transformative journey with the help of ALX Africa.

We recently caught up with Moussif to discuss how the programme has impacted his life in a brief Q&A session.

Q: Briefly describe your background in tech before your ALX programme. How has this programme changed your skillset and career opportunities?

A: Before joining the ALX programme, I was an automation industrial engineer, and I was also a self-taught developer. I had developed some software before, but I lacked a lot of the knowledge and important concepts that I later learned during my time at ALX. Before joining ALX, I thought I knew a lot just because I had some prior programming experience. However, I was shocked to discover there was a lot more depth to it.

ALX exposed my ignorance and taught me how to do things the right way.

With the support of my peers and mentors, I learned many new concepts and practised them directly in the real world. This is reflected in my new skill set and has directly impacted my career opportunities. I am now able to perform far more tasks, from front-end to back-end to DevOps, with high-quality performance, all thanks to ALX.

Q: What were some of the most valuable things you learnt during your ALX programme?

A: I learned many things in this 13-month journey at ALX. Here are the most important bits:

 • Coding alone is easier than coding with a team or group, but coding with a team is better for achieving great things. Learning skills to communicate with my teams during team projects was a big thing in my life.
 • Once you learn how to learn, there’s no limit after that. It doesn’t matter what technology, language, or requirement; you can learn anything. That’s what we learned the most in ALX: the learning method. And that reflects in my confidence when I see myself learning any concept from scratch and experiencing it on real-world projects.
 • We all have the grit to do hard things; we just need a community to support us and push us. You can’t do it alone, or maybe you can, but you have a better chance of doing it successfully with a community. Helping others is helping yourself because the person you help today will help you tomorrow.

Q: How does your experience with ALX compare to your university experience?

A: My university experience was great, and I learned many things that still help me in my career. However, if I compare it to ALX, it’s missing a few things. The main difference is the sense of community at ALX. You really feel like you belong, and you can see people close to you doing their best. This close bond really made a difference.

Another thing that makes ALX special is the mentorship along the way. The mentors did their best to answer all our questions, explain concepts to us, listen to feedback, and improve our experience. Through learning sessions and events, we had strong guidance that pushed a lot of leaders in the community to stand up and offer help.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is trying to choose between learning through ALX or through a university programme?

A: I would advise them to choose what they truly feel is right for them. It’s more about their personal aspirations and goals than about ALX or university. Whether you aspire to make a difference and give your best, you can achieve it at ALX, university, or anywhere else. Sit down with yourself, compare your options, and follow your intuition. However, I hope you’ll consider ALX. I genuinely want everyone to experience its amazing opportunities and support.

ALX provides the chance to feel empowered and supported, enabling you to achieve incredible things.

Q: How has completing the ALX programme impacted your career prospects or job opportunities?

A: Completing the programme has given me the confidence to apply to any job opportunity, even if it seems bigger than me, because I know I can perform. I have enough skills to learn anything and tackle difficult tasks. Additionally, through the friends I made in the programme, I have already been recommended and invited to a few job opportunities.

Having access to the ALX Fellowship is a significant benefit, too. Here, you can connect with thousands of ALX alumni and mentors to find your next job. It opens doors to a vast network of support and opportunities.

Q: Can you share a specific experience or project from the programme that stands out for you? Why was it impactful?

A: When we were very close to the deadline for our final project for graduation, with just a couple of days left, one of my peers, Yassir, wrote in our cohort channel that he was considering deferring. He felt like giving up because there was a lot of work to be done and the deadline was very close. Immediately, myself and other peers reached out to him, offering support and encouragement. We helped him see that there was still enough time to accomplish a lot, and we urged him not to give up but to keep going. On the day of graduation, he stood with us as an ALX Software Engineering Graduate. He made it! This experience showed us the power of community support; together, we can achieve more than what we can do alone.

Summary

ALX Africa creates an environment for self-development, helping individuals overcome insecurities through challenging projects and community events. Moussif’s journey with ALX was transformative, providing him with a strong foundation in software engineering principles and practices. Empowered with the skills, confidence, and resilience gained at ALX, Moussif now serves as an inspiration to aspiring technologists. His story highlights the impact of passion, perseverance, and education in a supportive environment.

The post Building Strong Communities with the ALX Fellowship first appeared on ALX Africa.

]]>
Charles Vogl is a renowned adviser, speaker, and author, best known for devising and developing leadership programs worldwide for big organisations like Amazon, Twitch, and Airbnb to name a few.

In his book, “The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging,” by author Charles Vogl, he says, “A community is not a product that can be manufactured, but a relationship that must be cultivated.” Here at ALX, we believe in that sentiment wholeheartedly.

His book goes on to help define what community is and offers some key principles to guide in building them. We have taken his teachings head-on when developing the ALX community, and specifically when applied to the ALX Fellowship. This article will tease out the essence of community, outline Vogl’s 7 Principles for Belonging, and illustrate how ALX uses them to build strong and lasting communities across Africa.

The Essence of Community: Belonging and Shared Purpose

Humans are social creatures, wired for connection. This innate desire is met by communities, groups of people who share a sense of belonging and a common thread. A community can be defined by a shared geography, like a neighbourhood, or a shared interest, like a book club. Regardless of the form, genuine communities fulfil essential psychological and social needs.

At their core, communities provide a sense of security and belonging. We are wired to crave social connection, and communities offer a space where we feel accepted and understood. This feeling of belonging combats loneliness and isolation, fostering emotional well-being. Furthermore, communities fulfil our need to contribute and feel valued. Through shared goals and activities, communities allow us to feel like we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

However, it’s important to differentiate between a genuine community and a simple gathering. A group of people waiting for a bus may share a physical space, but they lack the shared purpose or connection that defines a community. Similarly, social media groups can foster a sense of connection, but they often lack the deeper bonds and sense of responsibility that come from interaction and shared experiences.

True communities go beyond common interests or proximity. They are bound by a sense of shared purpose, mutual support, and a willingness to contribute to the collective good.

The Key Principles of Community Building

Building a strong and meaningful community doesn’t happen by accident. Author Charles Vogl, in his book, “The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging,” outlines seven key principles that serve as a roadmap for fostering genuine connection and shared purpose. Let’s delve into each principle and explore how they can be implemented in practice.

The Boundary Principle

Every community needs a defined boundary, a clear sense of who is “in” and who is “out.” This establishes a safe space for members who share core values and fosters trust.

For example, in order to access tech programmes with ALX, potential learners must be 18 years of age or older and of African origin. In order to be a part of the ALX Fellowship, learners must have successfully completed their tech programme.

The Initiation Principle

Meaningful entry into a community is crucial. Initiation rituals, whether formal or informal, signify commitment and mark the beginning of a member’s journey.

At our many Hubs located across the African continent, we hold Karibu ceremonies to welcome learners into the ALX community. This is part of our initiation principle.

The Rituals Principle

Shared rituals are the heartbeat of a community. They reinforce core values and create a sense of shared experience.

We host many events at our Hubs, like guest speakers, socials, and competitions that help people stay engaged with one another. These rituals create a sense of community by reinforcing our core values and creating a sense of shared experience among our learners.

The Temple Principle

A physical or virtual space dedicated to the community fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Our Hubs serve as the “temple” of ALX, where learners and alumni can come together for many different reasons. Whether they are looking to socialise with their peers or are looking for support from mentors, these spaces are built for our learners’ needs. Our alumni use the Hubs for networking purposes, too, creating a space that serves a function for ALX members at all stages of their journeys.

The Stories Principle

Every community has a story – its history, traditions, and shared experiences. These stories, passed down through generations or new members, create a sense of identity and belonging.

Our Karibu ceremonies always start by retelling the story of ALX so that each member understands where we come from. We are always clear about our mission and vision for Africa to ensure that our learners and alumni push towards the same goals as us.

The Symbols Principle

Visual symbols represent a community’s values and aspirations.

The ALX logo is our symbol with the “x” signifying the endless potential of opportunity. Just as it is used in science to represent a variable, we understand the potential of each learner as an unknown variable. Each person has their own different idea of success and we provide people with the opportunity to reach whatever success they seek.

The Inner Rings Principle

Mature communities have established “inner rings” that offer opportunities for growth and leadership. Senior members can mentor new members, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and ensuring the community’s future.

In the ALX community, this happens all the time. At networking events at Hubs, junior members meet with alumni to help them find employment. Current learners meet with mentors to help them with their coursework. These inner rings are not meant to separate people, but, instead bring them together.

When our learners successfully complete their programme, they are inducted into the ALX Fellowship, opening up many doors of opportunity for themselves.

By understanding and implementing these principles, individuals and groups can cultivate strong and vibrant communities that provide a sense of belonging, purpose, and shared experience.

Building Community with the ALX Fellowship

At ALX, it is our mission to help each individual find their place in the world of tech. We understand that each individual has a different definition of success and we therefore provide many different pathways to help them reach their goals.

When learners successfully complete their tech programme, they are able to be a part of the ALX Fellowship. Fellows become part of a thriving professional network where they have lifelong learning opportunities as well as additional perks to accelerate their careers. This includes access to diverse tech networks that can help alumni kick start their career, masterclasses and seminars at our Hubs, and career mentors to help guide alumni in their career journey.

In short, the Fellowship propels learners towards long-term career success.

This ALX alumni communities provide the opportunity for all of our learners to find their place in the world of tech. Want to be a Fellow? Apply now for an ALX tech programme and start your journey today.

Jacqueline Jijide dressed as a graduate | A Testament to Grit and Unwavering Resilience

Dreams can come true. This is Jacqueline Jijide‘s unwavering belief, a conviction that has carried her through life’s ups and downs. She has shattered the limitations set against her, becoming not only the first graduate in her family but also excelling in her role as a Programs Officer, youth leader, and virtual assistant in Malawi. Jacqueline joined The ROOM Fellowship last year, and has since become a Fellowship Ambassador, serving as an inspiration to peers.

Sharing with us an account of her humble beginnings and her relentless pursuit of success against all odds, Jacqueline is a testament to the profound personal and professional transformation that unfolds when you find your place.

Tell us a bit about your background and early life.

I was born into a modest, single-parent household, the third of three sisters and a brother. Originally from Thyolo in Malawi, we moved around a lot until we finally settled in Dedza. Despite financial hardships, I persevered through school, often juggling chores and long commutes, and learned the value of responsibility and hard work, from the tender age of six.

My mother’s encouragement fueled my determination to excel academically, and it paid off. From primary to secondary school, I consistently ranked at the top of my class. Although the transition to university life proved challenging, I completed my Diploma in Journalism at the University of Malawi Polytechnic in 2014. Despite facing financial constraints and limited opportunities in the media industry, I never gave up.

In 2020, my dream of further education was reignited thanks to the sponsorship of a certain angel in the United Kingdom, Association Zikomo, and Kapadia Education. After graduating with a distinction in Journalism and Mass Communication, I participated in various online courses, including the prestigious ALX Virtual Assistant programme in 2022, becoming the very first graduate in my family.

This is my story, a testament to grit and unwavering resilience that has shaped my journey to success.

What do you do currently?

I’m the Programs Officer at Ladder to Learning, a grassroots organisation dedicated to enhancing the learning experience in public primary schools in Malawi. I initially joined as a Reading Coach and Programs Assistant at the organisation. Additionally, I serve as a mentor and Programs Assistant at It Takes a Village, a similar organisation focused on reimagining education in rural communities around the world. I’m also proud to be an ambassador of The ROOM Fellowship.

What does your role entail?

As the Programs Officer at Ladder to Learning, my role involves supervising programme implementation to achieve organisational milestones. I train and oversee volunteers, evaluate programmes, and organise Literacy Hub activities. I also regularly produce programme reports and budgets, set programme milestones, counsel students on educational matters, collaborate with schools, and organise community activities.

What does the phrase “I Found My Place” mean to you, and how did ALX and The ROOM Fellowship support you on this journey to finding your place?

It means finding an enabling environment to grow in my profession. ALX and The ROOM Fellowship were instrumental in helping me find my place, providing essential training opportunities and motivational talks from various speakers. These sessions supported my personal growth and instilled in me the drive to solve challenges in my community. Additionally, the Fellowship inspired me to take up relevant courses to enhance my professional development, making myself an asset and a worthwhile investment.

What transformation have you experienced in your personal and professional outlook on life now that you’ve found your place?

My outlook on life has changed significantly! I feel much richer in professional knowledge, since I’ve been given the opportunity to hone my skills. It’s also provided financial freedom, allowing me to pursue my entrepreneurial ambitions confidently. Overall, I am more self-assured, motivated, and optimistic about the future, knowing that I am on the right path to success.

Jacqueline Jijide | A Testament to Grit and Unwavering Resilience

How will this opportunity help you achieve your purpose in life and add value to the world?

I’m empowered to make a positive impact in the education sector, especially in the government primary schools. By implementing effective programmes and engaging with the community, I can contribute value and create meaningful change. This opportunity also sets me on the right path towards working with international organisations, which has always been a dream of mine.

You have your whole career ahead of you and are sure to experience more wins. Why do you think it is important to share your story now and celebrate your career milestones?

I want to be able to inspire others with my journey. Many people face challenges due to their backgrounds, but my story shows that dreams can come true. I hope to represent the underrepresented, and encourage girls and women not to give up. Despite facing obstacles, I returned to school and became the first graduate in my family. I want the world to know that trusting God, the process, and never giving up can lead to great achievements, and that they too can be the next big thing to happen in Africa and beyond.

What advice would you give to a Fellow trying to find their place?

I would say embrace your journey with determination and resilience. Draw strength from your background, no matter how challenging, and let it fuel your passion to make a difference. Pursue education and personal growth relentlessly, as it opens doors to new opportunities. Seek support from mentors, peers, and organisations like ALX and The ROOM Fellowship, as they can provide invaluable guidance. Stay focused on your goals, and never lose sight of your purpose. Remember that every obstacle can be a stepping stone to success. With hard work and perseverance, you can carve a path to greatness and inspire others along the way.

Edna Kiilu | No Matter Where You Come From, You Have a Place in the World - #FindYourPlace Virtual Assistant

Digital nomad Edna Kiilu came from humble beginnings in Machakos County, Kenya, but she didn’t let her circumstances define her. Now, as an Operations Specialist, an ALX-trained Virtual Assistant, and a Community Ambassador for ALX and The ROOM Fellowship, she has the opportunity to pursue two of her topmost passions – travel and community development.

In this edition of the #FindYourPlace series, Edna shares her story to inspire others with backgrounds similar to hers and illustrates how her appetite for challenges opened doors of opportunity to her at ALX and beyond.

Tell us a bit about your background and early life.

I was born and raised in Machakos County, in a small town called Mitaboni, and later moved to the remote, yet serene town of Ivovoani. My childhood wasn’t very different from that of many children in my hometown; my family faced financial hardships, and we relied on the bare necessities to get by. I didn’t have the guidance or support system that many others had; my father struggled with alcoholism, which made things even more challenging. Nevertheless, we managed to navigate through life, and I’m immensely grateful for where I am today.

What do you do currently?

I’m a self employed virtual assistant (thanks to the ALX Virtual Assistant Training Programme!) providing individuals and organisations in Kenya and Singapore with operational and administrative support. I’m also a Community Ambassador for ALX and The ROOM Fellowship, where my role involves programme support, content creation, community engagement and much more.

What experiences led to your current position as a Virtual Assistant and Community Ambassador?

When I lost my previous job, I made the decision to take a 6-month mental health break from full-time employment. I’m not one who enjoys being idle, so in that time, I decided to search for any short training courses I could take remotely, while travelling. My search led me to the ALX Virtual Assistant programme, and it ticked all my boxes – online and self-paced, but with weekly deadlines and guidelines to keep me disciplined. I signed up, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Once I completed the programme, I became an active member of the The ROOM Fellowship, and when the opportunity came to be one of the Fellows to test the ALX Foundations Pilot programme, I grabbed it with both hands. Being a part of ALX Foundations led to my current position as a Community Ambassador, and it’s only been up from there.

What does the phrase “I Found My Place” mean to you?

Simply put, it means I am happy, mentally healthy, and at peace with my current role and career trajectory.

What did you do to set you on this transformative journey to finding your place?

I was really open to learning and trying new things, like the ALX Foundations Pilot programme. I could have easily turned down the opportunity when I received it via email, and asked, like some of my colleagues did, “Why should I help to build a programme for others?”, but I saw it as another learning opportunity, and I’m extremely glad that I did!

Edna Kiilu | No Matter Where You Come From, You Have a Place in the World - #FindYourPlace Virtual Assistant

What transformation have you experienced in your personal and professional outlook on life now that you’ve found your place?

Being able to work remotely full-time has really given me a chance to pursue another passion of mine – travel. I have the flexibility to travel whenever I want, as long as I have my laptop with me. This experience has also helped me hone my skills in time management and schedule organisation, as having a full-time job while being a digital nomad requires effective planning. Although there are a few hiccups here and there, particularly power outages, I’ve been able to master this art of working remotely. No one ever notices that I’m working from the middle of nowhere, because I always get the job done.

What excites you most about contributing to Africa’s emergence as a source of exceptional talent and a leading force in the global tech ecosystem?

Everything! To be part of a team that is helping other African Youth find their Ikigai is quite liberating and exciting.

You have your whole career ahead of you and are sure to experience more wins. Why do you think it is important to share your story now and celebrate your career milestones?

If my win can motivate someone else to find their place, then that is one more win to celebrate. If I can encourage one more African youth with a background like mine to find their place, that is an even bigger win for me.

What advice would you give to a Fellow trying to find their place?

I’d like them to know that no matter where you come from, you have a place in the world. You just have to keep looking until you find it. I found mine, didn’t I? Keep #doinghardthings and things will get easier with each milestone.

Mohamed Ali | The Risk-Taking The ROOM Fellowship Ambassador - #FindYourPlace

In this conversation with Egypt-born web developer and ALX SE graduate Mohamed Ali, we gain some insight into why he’s such a rising star. His exemplary leadership in The ROOM Fellowship led to his selection as an ambassador for this impactful tech community, where he’s coaching, mentoring and collaborating with other Fellows in Egypt and across the community.

As part of the #FindYourPlace series, find out how ALX and The ROOM Fellowship provided Mohamed with the confidence and skills to pursue a career in tech.

Tell us a bit about your background and early life. How did it influence your journey to tech?

I’ve loved games since I was a child. Funny side note – my father bought me a computer when I was much younger, and a neighbour used to sell me games that were actually free! Anyway, one day I was exploring the computer’s settings, and I accidentally deleted the Windows file. It was eventually fixed by a computer engineer, but this made me even more interested in computers, and I was eager to understand how he solved the problem. As I continued to use the computer, I kept making ‘mistakes’ that required fixing, until one day when I found out the engineer was reinstalling the Windows programmes via a CD. He explained to me how it worked, and this piqued my interest in computers at the age of 9.

Five years later, we got internet access at home, and I began to use search engines to explore the wonderful world of technology. I was eventually able to troubleshoot and fix computer issues by myself. These experiences formed the foundation for my love of technology, and what prompted me to become a Software Engineer.

What do you do currently?

I am a front-end member of the Google Developer Students Club (GDSC) at Fayoum University in Egypt, and I am currently working on a website development project for a local community organisation. My role is to design and develop the website’s front-end, which is the part of the website that users see and interact with. I am also responsible for ensuring that the website is user-friendly and accessible to everyone.

Additionally, I recently became a Fellowship Ambassador for The ROOM Fellowship, a role I’m really excited about.

How will this opportunity help you achieve your purpose, and add value to the world?

The ROOM Fellowship Ambassador Mohamed Ali at a Google Developer Student Clubs event | #FindYourPlace

It will allow me to use my skills and knowledge to help others succeed. As a Fellowship Ambassador of The ROOM, I get to coach, mentor, and collaborate with other talented Fellows from across the continent, helping them develop their skills and achieve their goals. It also provides me with a platform to advocate for change. I believe that it is important to speak out about the challenges I and other tech professionals face, and to call for action towards a more inclusive and equitable tech industry in Africa.

What does the phrase “I Found My Place” mean to you?

To me, it means a combination of different things. It means finding a career that I am passionate about and that I am good at, while also finding a community of people who accept and support me. It also means finding a sense of purpose that drives me to make a difference in the world.

I believe that everyone has unique talents and gifts, and when we finally find our place, we can use our gifts to make the world better.

What was the one thing you did that set you on this transformative journey to finding your place, and how do you think you’ve changed since then?

What helped me was summoning the courage to take risks. I was always a good student, and I was always told that I would be successful in whatever I did, but I never really felt passionate about anything. I just did what I thought I was supposed to do. Finding my place in the tech industry has now completely transformed my outlook on life.

On a personal level, I am now more confident and self-assured. I know that I am capable of achieving my goals, and I am not afraid to take risks. I am also more passionate about my work, and I am excited to see what the future holds.

On a professional level, I am more focused and driven. I have a clear sense of purpose, and I am committed to making a difference in the world through my work. I am also more collaborative and team-oriented, and I am always looking for ways to learn and grow.

It’s definitely a journey that I’m still on, but I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come.

The ROOM Fellowship Ambassador Mohamed Ali at the Techne Summit in Cairo | #FindYourPlace

What role did ALX and The ROOM Fellowship play in helping you find your place?

ALX and The ROOM Fellowship provided me with an opportunity to learn from experienced tech professionals and mentors within those programmes. This experience has significantly contributed to the development of my skills and deepened my understanding of the tech industry. Within these communities, I’ve also had the privilege to work with other talented people who share similar interests and a passion for tech.

Before I joined ALX and The ROOM Fellowship, I didn’t think that I was qualified to work in the tech industry. But these programmes helped me to build my skills and gain the confidence that I needed to pursue a career in tech.

You have your whole career ahead of you, and are sure to experience more wins. Why do you think it is important to share your story now and celebrate your career milestones?

For a number of reasons:

 1. To inspire others to pursue their own dreams and goals: When people see that you have achieved success, it can give them the motivation to do the same.
 1. To build a network: Sharing my story has been a great way to connect with other people in my field. You never know who you might meet and what avenues might open up for collaboration and mutual growth.
 1. To boost my confidence: When you take the time to celebrate your accomplishments, it can help you to feel more confident in your abilities. This has been especially helpful for me, especially when I am facing challenges or setbacks.
 1. So I never forget my journey: As you continue on your career path, it can be easy to forget all of the hard work and sacrifices that you have made. Sharing my story helps me remember my journey and all of the lessons that I have learned along the way.

What advice would you give to a Fellow trying to find their place?

If you are still searching for your place in the world, don’t give up. Keep exploring and learning, and eventually you will find it. And when you do, you will know it. You will feel a sense of peace and satisfaction that you have never felt before.

Other tips I’ll share are:

 • Explore different options. Don’t be afraid to try new things and step outside of your comfort zone. The more you explore, the more likely you are to find something that you are passionate about.
 • Talk to people who are already doing what you want to do. Ask them about their experiences and what advice they would give. They can give you valuable insights that can help you on your journey.
 • Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is a part of life, and it’s important to learn from your mistakes. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back from pursuing your dreams.
 • Be patient. Finding your place takes time. Don’t expect to find it overnight. Just keep exploring and learning, and eventually, you will find something that you are passionate about.
 • Celebrate your successes. When you achieve a goal, take some time to celebrate. This helps you stay motivated and pushes you to keep moving forward.

Introducing the #FindYourPlace series, an inspiring account of how ALX graduates and members of The ROOM Fellowship are successfully navigating the tech world and making their mark in diverse fields within the industry. From founding startups to getting hired in a variety of technical and operational roles, Fellows are sharing the stories not often told.

Vivian Dzrekey | Overnight Success is an Illusion - #FindYourPlace

Vivian Dzrekey, startup founder and Health Service Administrator from Accra, Ghana, has been a Fellow since 2022. She talks to us about the personal and professional transformations she has witnessed over the years, and how she’s been able to find her place with help from ALX and The ROOM Fellowship.

Tell us a bit about your background and early life.

I grew up in the Central Region of Ghana, and I used to be a little shy. I was a homebody, and had some challenges fitting in with my peers at the time, but that didn’t stop my passion for social impact and giving back to society. I’ve been an avid volunteer with nonprofit organisations and initiatives, and even started my own foundation called Women In Service Eternally (W.I.S.E) Foundation, a Christian, women-led foundation that aims to support vulnerable persons in deprived areas.

You’re quite the serial entrepreneur. Could you shed some light on your other venture, aside from W.I.S.E?

With support from the ALX Ventures Founder Academy, I’ve been able to bring to life an idea I had 3 years ago, and I’m now the founder of a creative marketing and management startup – Empire DHV. I work as the team lead, managing a team of 5 core members and 15+ freelancers. I’ve been able to leverage my skills and experiences in providing services that my company offers.

Sharing your wins is a form of accountability and motivation to yourself and others. It’s evidence that you have been where you are now, and that you can make it to where you want to be.

How did you come to found this startup and what experiences led up to it?

I think what helped was learning how to recognise an opportunity for what it is in the first place. Because of this, I’ve been able to position myself in the right places and work with the knowledge I’ve gathered from my time at ALX Ventures Founder Academy and The ROOM Fellowship. I’ve always been eager to learn what I don’t know and unlearn what cannot help me progress. The startup journey hasn’t been easy; financing has been a challenge, but I’ve been bootstrapping so far, and I thank God for the progress I’ve made.

What does the phrase “I Found My Place” mean to you?

Vivian Dzrekey holding up a framed collage | Overnight Success is an Illusion - #FindYourPlace

That phrase resonates with me so much because, as a professional Health Service Administrator, and someone who has gone through several other programmes that are outside the health sector, finding my place in tech has been one of the best things that has happened to me. I’m doing my best to stay on top of this field I’m transitioning into by learning, unlearning, relearning, and keeping a growth mindset that helps me stay adaptable and resilient.

What role did ALX and The ROOM Fellowship play in helping you find your place?

ALX and The ROOM Fellowship have provided me with top-notch knowledge and career growth opportunities, and I’m having the feast of my life! The input they bring to our growth as rising tech professionals is invaluable.

You have your whole career ahead of you, and are sure to experience more wins. Why do you think it is important to share your story now and celebrate your career milestones?

It’s important because no human remains the same forever; you either grow or decline in value. Sharing my wins today is a form of accountability to myself, helping me track my progress as I navigate this journey. It also serves as a form of motivation to myself and to others who are on this journey of ‘finding their place’. It’s evidence that someone has been where they are now, and that they can make it to where they want to be.

What advice would you give to a Fellow trying to find their place?

Rome was not built in a day. Overnight success is an illusion. Stay focused, put in the work, and in a matter of time, you will see the fruits of your hard work and perseverance gladly manifesting.

Jackie Namalwa | Gold Fellowship Pathfinder

Uganda-based Jackie Namalwa is on a mission to fuel the aspirations of young tech professionals and help them achieve their dreams. As a senior talent recruiter with over a decade’s experience in the tech recruitment industry, Jackie understands clearly what it takes to support the growth and success of tech talent not only in Africa, but across the world. Her dedication is cemented by her personal exposure to mentorship and career support, and now, she’s looking to pay it forward.

In this conversation, Jackie shares her journey to becoming a Pathfinder with The ROOM Gold Fellowship, the joy she finds in her work, and how young tech professionals can take advantage of the valuable offerings The Gold Fellowship has to offer.

Please share a bit about your background

I’ve had the privilege of hiring tech talent for big tech companies, startups, and scale-ups across diverse regions, including Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, the US, UK, Canada, and the Middle East. My expertise spans both in-house and agency recruitment, and this has helped me understand the intricacies and nuances of hiring for different technical roles including engineering, product development, data analytics and more.

One aspect of my work that truly energises me is connecting with tech professionals, understanding their aspirations, and leveraging that knowledge to connect them with their dream opportunities. I am deeply passionate about fostering these connections within the tech space and helping individuals achieve their career goals.

What inspired you to become a Pathfinder with The ROOM Gold Fellowship?

The ROOM’s mission to connect tech talent with global opportunities aligned perfectly with my passion for facilitating transformative career journeys. The prospect of being part of a company that empowers junior tech professionals to unlock their full potential and thrive in their chosen career path was truly inspiring to me.

How do you define your role as a Pathfinder and what are some of your key responsibilities?

Gold Fellowship Pathfinder talking to two ALX Fellows

As a Pathfinder, I have the privilege of being a catalyst for the career growth of emerging tech talent. I work closely with young tech professionals, helping them map their career paths, facilitate transformative opportunities, and unlock their maximum potential. By offering a comprehensive range of resources such as employment prospects, mentorship programmes, coaching sessions and opportunities for public speaking engagements, I am dedicated to expediting the developmental journey of junior tech talent, empowering them to realise their life’s purpose and make a lasting impact in their careers. My role also involves building long-term relationships with employers, and facilitating mutually beneficial connections with our tech talent.

What do you love most about being a Pathfinder?

I absolutely love engaging in one-on-one sessions with the Gold Fellows and establishing deeper connections with them. It is gratifying to work alongside young people who possess a strong drive to gain clarity of their career goals and aspirations.

One of the highlights so far has been collaborating closely with The ROOM Fellowship team to develop a comprehensive job readiness kit specifically tailored to empower Gold Fellows with a competitive edge in their pursuit of dream roles. This initiative is aimed at equipping them with the necessary tools for success, and I’m thrilled to contribute to that.

What are some of your top tips for standing out in an interview?

Summarise your CV. When faced with a “tell me about yourself” question, focus on discussing relevant experiences – essentially, prioritise quality over quantity.

Conduct thorough research on the company and the individuals you will be interviewing with. Familiarise yourself with the company’s products, services, and competitors, so you can demonstrate your knowledge and expertise.

Carefully review the job requirements and analyse them in detail. Under each requirement, note examples of how you’ve demonstrated them throughout your career. These will be the foundation of your answers to competency-based questions.

Practice answering potential interview questions and rehearse your responses out loud. This will help you refine your delivery and articulate your experiences. The more prepared you are, the more confident you will be.

What role does mentorship and career coaching play in accelerating the growth of young professionals?

Gold Fellowship Pathfinder showing his phone to two ALX Fellows

A significant one. Mentorship and career coaching foster a culture of lifelong learning and individual advancement. They nurture a mindset of growth and inspire young professionals to embrace obstacles, pursue novel prospects, and continually enhance their skill set. Most importantly, they play a pivotal role in propelling the career growth of young professionals and equipping them with the necessary resources and expertise to navigate the dynamic tech industry with confidence.

Who is a Pathfinder that has impacted your own journey?

During my tenure at a previous company, I was fortunate to have a manager who doubled as my mentor and coach. Recognising areas where I needed improvement, she dedicated time and effort in honing my skills and leadership abilities. She also helped in identifying growth opportunities within the company that aligned with my skill set, and encouraged me to pursue them. Her support really helped to build my proficiency as a technical recruiter.

What value would you say the Gold Fellowship holds for young tech professionals?

The ROOM Gold Fellowship is an exceptional talent experience that provides young tech professionals with various levels of support. Gold Fellows gain access to lifelong opportunities and enticing benefits exclusive to them. Her Silver Lining Turned Into a Golden Opportunity | Divine Chisom Ukonu - ALX SE Gold Fellow

The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging time for most people. Like many young Nigerians who had just completed their national youth service, Divine Chisom Ukonu found herself stuck at home during lockdown with little to occupy her.

Little did she know that this unprecedented season would ignite her interest in technology and lead her to apply to ALX’s Software Engineering programme. Investing 70 hours a week paid off, propelling Divine to the top talent ranks and securing her a coveted spot in The ROOM Gold Fellowship.

Below, she opens up about her transformative experience and ambitious aspirations.

When did you first become interested in tech? Is this something you have always wanted to do?

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked my interest in tech. After completing my national service in Nigeria, I found myself isolated due to the lockdown. With all the free time on my hands, I embarked on a journey to keep myself busy, which led me to start learning to code and exploring the world of tech. During this exploration, I came across an advertisement for the ALX SE programme, decided to take a leap of faith and apply. The rest is history.

What were some of your highlights of the SE programme?

My biggest highlight was the fact that I completed this year-long online program that required me to dedicate over 70 hours per week! It was not definitely easy, but I’m so glad I made it through.

Another highlight was the fact that the programme was largely project-based, and we had to virtually teach ourselves. Peer learning days were really helpful because of this, and were a significant feature of the programme that I benefited from.

As a tech professional, what are your career aspirations and goals?

Though I gained software engineering skills through ALX, I actually work professionally as a freelancer in the data field. As a junior data scientist, my primary goal is to gain valuable experience and expertise in the field. I am eager to delve into machine learning algorithms, deep learning techniques, and artificial intelligence applications and have plans to pursue further education and certifications in these specialised areas. Ultimately, I hope to contribute significantly to the development of data-driven solutions that can address critical business challenges and enhance decision-making processes.

Who are your top role models in the tech space?

I truly admire all the instructors I’ve had in the different tech programmes I’ve enrolled in, including Google’s Data Analytics course and the KaggleX BIPOC Mentorship Program. Of course, from ALX’s SE programme, I am immensely grateful for the support and guidance I received from Maarten van Middelaar, who was instrumental as my technical mentor.

What value does being a Gold Fellow hold for you, and how has your journey been so far?

I feel so privileged to be part of the Gold Fellowship, and I’m grateful for this opportunity. My journey recently began, but it has been a great experience so far. I’ve had a session with my Pathfinder and I’m scheduled for another session next week. She has already shared some opportunities with me and some resources to help me with setting my career goals. I’m really enthusiastic about what lies ahead.

Why do you think it’s important to belong to professional networks and communities such as the Gold Fellowship?

Professional networks like the Gold Fellowship are important for several reasons. Firstly, they provide access to a wealth of resources that can help me stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and best practices. They are also a great platform for networking with like-minded professionals who share common interests and goals, and are a source of valuable support and guidance throughout my career.

Finally, please share a quote that inspires you?

“The only way that we can justify privilege is by solving the world’s biggest problems, and by doing hard things.” – Fred Swaniker

Gold Fellowship Pathfinder Kutchi Katatumba

Meet Gold Fellowship Pathfinder, Kutchi Katatumba. As a talent developer and human resources professional with over a decade of experience, Kutchi is a specialist in supporting young professionals to unleash their potential and position themselves for jobs in high-demand industries, having successfully prepared numerous individuals for such opportunities.

In this conversation, she shares valuable insights into her role as a Pathfinder, what inspired her to take up this position, and offers a key tip that every rising tech professional should apply for career success.

Can you share a bit about your background?

I have a background in Psychology and HR, with a specialisation in Talent Development and Recruitment. My passion has always been in supporting young people to realise their potential. Before joining The ROOM Gold Fellowship, I worked with young people from diverse backgrounds, providing educational, technical and soft skills training to maximise their chances of getting jobs in Investment Banking and Asset Management. I also volunteer as a career coach and mentor, and was recently a Rise selector for the Rise program.

How do you define your role as a Pathfinder?

I define my role as being a partner, career coach and the biggest supporter of the young professionals I work with. This entails collaborating with them to map out their career goals and ambitions, connecting them with opportunities that fit their profile and supporting them to realise their potential.

What inspired you to become a Pathfinder with The ROOM Gold Fellowship?

Hearing the stories of the winners of the 2022 ALX SE Students challenge inspired me to become a Pathfinder with the Gold Fellowship. These stories showed me there is an abundance of top talent on our continent who just need support to accelerate their careers. The Gold Fellowship provides a great opportunity to support the next generation of tech leaders in Africa through mentorship, coaching and building relationships, and I’m excited to be a part of that.

What are some of your key responsibilities as a Pathfinder?

My primary responsibility is to provide mentorship to Gold Fellows, partnering with them to develop their career goals and create a plan to achieve them. I also offer guidance in essential job preparation skills such as CV writing, networking and interviewing. Additionally, I help the fellows identify job opportunities that align with their profiles and serve as a sounding board for them throughout their career journeys. Finally, I encourage fellows to attend networking events, and support them in building relationships that can grow their careers.

What do you love most about your job?

I really enjoy connecting with the young professionals. It’s always inspiring to hear their stories and how they have overcome challenges to get to where they are.

Why do you think mentorship and career coaching is important? What role does it play in accelerating the growth of a young professional’s career?

Mentorship and career coaching provides an opportunity to learn from someone who has experience navigating the complex and challenging world of work. A mentor and career coach can provide guidance on career decisions, keep you accountable to your own goals and ambitions, and provide networking opportunities. A lot of young professionals lack access to experienced industry professionals and have limited exposure to the world of work. This impedes their ability to get jobs, not due to the absence of talent, but as a result of their struggle to navigate the system. Mentorship and career coaching addresses this issue, and can accelerate the growth of a young professional’s career by providing the tools, resources and support needed to realise their potential.

What do you think is a key resource for a young professional looking to ignite their career?

Networking! Building and creating a professional network can provide opportunities for career growth. By connecting with people in their industry, young professionals can learn about job openings, gain mentors and build relationships that may lead to future collaborations or partnerships.

What value does the Gold Fellowship hold for young professionals? What difference will it make to their lives?

There is great value in the Gold Fellowship because it gives young professionals access to a Pathfinder who can provide mentorship and support. The Gold Fellowship also provides co-working spaces for the fellows – not only does this enhance productivity, but it is also an opportunity for fellows to connect with startups. More importantly, Gold Fellows get to connect with other talented tech professionals and be a part of The ROOM’s talent community. In short, the Gold Fellowship is building the next generation of influential African leaders; I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to be part of it!

Richard Matovu, a Software Engineer leading a vibrant group of Ruby Developers in his home country, Uganda, is working to bridge the gap between tech education and implementation, while fostering innovation and growth in the fintech industry. His participation in the ALX Software Engineering programme played a key role in setting him on this path, and he hasn’t looked back since. Now, as a member of The ROOM Gold Fellowship – a prestigious tech career acceleration programme – Richard offers insight into his tech journey and career goals, and the conducive environment provided by the Gold Fellowship for career advancement.

What were your highlights of the SE programme at ALX?

The programme is significantly practical, especially when compared to similar courses at the university level. I especially enjoyed the encouragement we received to research and figure things out on our own.

How did ALX improve your technical skills?

My critical thinking and problem-solving skills were enhanced through the challenging tasks and projects we did every day. Moreover, the SE programme introduced me to programming languages such as Node.js, Python, C, Javascript and Ruby, which I hadn’t previously been familiar with.

Besides leading the African Ruby Community in Uganda, you work remotely for a fintech company in Kenya. What does your role entail?

I am a Senior Engineer at Finplus Group Holdings Limited, where I manage and oversee the development process, tutor and nurture junior and mid-level engineers, engage with clients, and make improvements to the structure and design of projects.

What are your career aspirations as a tech professional?

I hope to become a tech expert in web development and DevOps and ultimately transition into a Chief Technology Officer role for a company one day.

How has your journey with the Gold Fellowship been so far, and what has been your most noteworthy benefit?

It has been quite eventful; meeting other Gold Fellows and getting my own Pathfinder has been a great experience! Having a Pathfinder is definitely a highlight. It provides me an opportunity to gain knowledge and guidance, which is extremely useful for navigating the tech space.

Overall, what value does the Gold Fellowship hold for you?

It has provided me with an exceptional career coach, granted access to a community of bright minds to network with, and offered numerous opportunities for personal and career growth. Being a Gold Fellow serves as a constant reminder of how far I have come, the challenges I have overcome, and gives me the courage to keep going.

Why do you think it’s important to belong to professional networks and communities such as the Gold Fellowship?

Professional networks and communities open up doors to various career advancement opportunities and help in forging connections with talented individuals, with whom one can make an impact on the world.
