Charles Vogl is a renowned adviser, speaker, and author, best known for devising and developing leadership programs worldwide for big organisations like Amazon, Twitch, and Airbnb to name a few.

In his book, “The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging,” by author Charles Vogl, he says, “A community is not a product that can be manufactured, but a relationship that must be cultivated.” Here at ALX, we believe in that sentiment wholeheartedly.

His book goes on to help define what community is and offers some key principles to guide in building them. We have taken his teachings head-on when developing the ALX community, and specifically when applied to the ALX Fellowship. This article will tease out the essence of community, outline Vogl’s 7 Principles for Belonging, and illustrate how ALX uses them to build strong and lasting communities across Africa.

The Essence of Community: Belonging and Shared Purpose

Humans are social creatures, wired for connection. This innate desire is met by communities, groups of people who share a sense of belonging and a common thread. A community can be defined by a shared geography, like a neighbourhood, or a shared interest, like a book club. Regardless of the form, genuine communities fulfil essential psychological and social needs.

At their core, communities provide a sense of security and belonging. We are wired to crave social connection, and communities offer a space where we feel accepted and understood. This feeling of belonging combats loneliness and isolation, fostering emotional well-being.  Furthermore, communities fulfil our need to contribute and feel valued.  Through shared goals and activities, communities allow us to feel like we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

However, it’s important to differentiate between a genuine community and a simple gathering. A group of people waiting for a bus may share a physical space, but they lack the shared purpose or connection that defines a community. Similarly, social media groups can foster a sense of connection, but they often lack the deeper bonds and sense of responsibility that come from interaction and shared experiences.

True communities go beyond common interests or proximity. They are bound by a sense of shared purpose, mutual support, and a willingness to contribute to the collective good.

The Key Principles of Community Building

Building a strong and meaningful community doesn’t happen by accident. Author Charles Vogl, in his book, “The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging,” outlines seven key principles that serve as a roadmap for fostering genuine connection and shared purpose. Let’s delve into each principle and explore how they can be implemented in practice.

The Boundary Principle

Every community needs a defined boundary, a clear sense of who is “in” and who is “out.” This establishes a safe space for members who share core values and fosters trust. 

For example, in order to access tech programmes with ALX, potential learners must be 18 years of age or older and of African origin. In order to be a part of the ALX Fellowship, learners must have successfully completed their tech programme.

The Initiation Principle

Meaningful entry into a community is crucial. Initiation rituals, whether formal or informal, signify commitment and mark the beginning of a member’s journey. 

At our many Hubs located across the African continent, we hold Karibu ceremonies to welcome learners into the ALX community. This is part of our initiation principle.

The Rituals Principle

Shared rituals are the heartbeat of a community. They reinforce core values and create a sense of shared experience.

We host many events at our Hubs, like guest speakers, socials, and competitions that help people stay engaged with one another. These rituals create a sense of community by reinforcing our core values and creating a sense of shared experience among our learners.

The Temple Principle

A physical or virtual space dedicated to the community fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose. 

Our Hubs serve as the “temple” of ALX, where learners and alumni can come together for many different reasons. Whether they are looking to socialise with their peers or are looking for support from mentors, these spaces are built for our learners’ needs. Our alumni use the Hubs for networking purposes, too, creating a space that serves a function for ALX members at all stages of their journeys.

The Stories Principle

Every community has a story – its history, traditions, and shared experiences. These stories, passed down through generations or new members, create a sense of identity and belonging.

Our Karibu ceremonies always start by retelling the story of ALX so that each member understands where we come from. We are always clear about our mission and vision for Africa to ensure that our learners and alumni push towards the same goals as us.

The Symbols Principle

Visual symbols represent a community’s values and aspirations.

The ALX logo is our symbol with the “x” signifying the endless potential of opportunity. Just as it is used in science to represent a variable, we understand the potential of each learner as an unknown variable. Each person has their own different idea of success and we provide people with the opportunity to reach whatever success they seek.

The Inner Rings Principle

Mature communities have established “inner rings” that offer opportunities for growth and leadership. Senior members can mentor new members, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and ensuring the community’s future.

In the ALX community, this happens all the time. At networking events at Hubs, junior members meet with alumni to help them find employment. Current learners meet with mentors to help them with their coursework. These inner rings are not meant to separate people, but, instead bring them together.

When our learners successfully complete their programme, they are inducted into the ALX Fellowship, opening up many doors of opportunity for themselves.

By understanding and implementing these principles, individuals and groups can cultivate strong and vibrant communities that provide a sense of belonging, purpose, and shared experience.

Now read that back again. Did you notice that AI wrote the first paragraph of this article? Probably not. All that was written there is factually correct. It sounds good on paper and is compelling enough to include in this article. But it was written by an AI engine called ChatGPT after being asked to, “write an introductory paragraph for an article about AI being the future of work in the tech industry.”

Aside from writing introductory paragraphs for blog articles, AI is used in a wide range of applications, from automating tasks to analysing data and making predictions. The technology used in self-driving cars, personalised customer support experiences, and remote medical diagnoses is also powered by AI. It is fundamentally changing the way we work, and essentially, the future is here. 

AI tools are projected to generate over $2.9 trillion in corporate value over the next few years. To get a piece of that pie, it’s important to reskill and upskill to keep up with the rate of change.

AI is Changing the Way We Work

I’m sure you’ve seen the articles with headlines that read, “AI Will Take Your Job,” or something to that effect. The truth is, if you learn to use AI to your advantage, AI can take your career to reach new heights.

By 2025, it is projected that around 85 million jobs will be replaced by AI. This is a scary prospect until you realise that, over the same period of time, AI is expected to create roughly 97 million new jobs. In order to tap into the jobs that “the robot revolution” will create, workers need to learn how to master these new technologies by upskilling or reskilling. It can be as simple as doing some research on your own or taking an online course, like those offered through ALX Africa.

The professionals who can adapt, upskill and reskill successfully will be rewarded with an abundance of work opportunities. The key is keeping your ear to the ground and to be aware of changes as they happen.

In healthcare, AI is being used to improve medical diagnosis and treatment. AI algorithms can analyse medical images, predict patient outcomes, and even suggest treatment plans. Job roles in this field include AI healthcare specialist and medical data analyst, whose task is to leverage AI to enhance patient care and hospital operations.

AI healthcare specialists work closely with medical professionals to develop AI models that can assist in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient monitoring. These professionals need a deep understanding of medical data and AI algorithms to ensure that the AI systems are accurate and reliable.

What is ALX Foundations?

Every ALX programme starts with ALX Foundations, a that prepares you to thrive in the digital workforce. The basis of the module teaches you foundational skills that will not only help in your upcoming specialisation programme, but also in your career after graduation. Throughout the course of this module, you will learn critical communication, leadership, and career-building skills to develop you into a well-rounded professional.

The Importance of Skills Development

Having a successful tech career requires more than just technical knowledge. There are important professional skills that are important to learn as well.

Technical knowledge, often called hard skills, refers to things you learn. As an example, software engineers know how to code and program and can build software with those skills. The things they’ve learnt through study are hard skills that create a software engineer’s specific expertise.

Professional knowledge, often called soft skills, refers to interpersonal skills that become part of your behaviour patterns. The first part of Foundations is all about your own self-awareness. After being loaded into our online systems, you’ll meet your peers and participate in workshops that help you articulate your own growth. Can you share a bit about your background?

I have a background in Psychology and HR, with a specialisation in Talent Development and Recruitment. My passion has always been in supporting young people to realise their potential. Before joining The ROOM Gold Fellowship, I worked with young people from diverse backgrounds, providing educational, technical and soft skills training​ to maximise their chances of getting jobs in Investment Banking and Asset Management. I also volunteer as a career coach and mentor, and was recently a Rise selector for the Rise program.

How do you define your role as a Pathfinder?

I define my role as being a partner, career coach and the biggest supporter of the young professionals I work with. This entails collaborating with them to map out their career goals and ambitions, connecting them with opportunities that fit their profile and supporting them to realise their potential.

What inspired you to become a Pathfinder with The ROOM Gold Fellowship?

Hearing the stories of the winners of the 2022 ALX SE Students challenge inspired me to become a Pathfinder with the Gold Fellowship. These stories showed me there is an abundance of top talent on our continent who just need support to accelerate their careers. The Gold Fellowship provides a great opportunity to support the next generation of tech leaders in Africa through mentorship, coaching and building relationships, and I’m excited to be a part of that.

What are some of your key responsibilities as a Pathfinder?

My primary responsibility is to provide mentorship to Gold Fellows, partnering with them to develop their career goals and create a plan to achieve them. I also offer guidance in essential job preparation skills such as CV writing, networking and interviewing. Additionally, I help the fellows identify job opportunities that align with their profiles and serve as a sounding board for them throughout their career journeys. Finally, I encourage fellows to attend networking events, and support them in building relationships that can grow their careers.

What do you love most about your job?

Mentorship and career coaching provides an opportunity to learn from someone who has experience navigating the complex and challenging world of work. A mentor and career coach can provide guidance on career decisions, keep you accountable to your own goals and ambitions, and provide networking opportunities. A lot of young professionals lack access to experienced industry professionals and have limited exposure to the world of work. This impedes their ability to get jobs, not due to the absence of talent, but as a result of their struggle to navigate the system. However, African tech trailblazers like Mary MwangiNaadiya Moosajee and Miishe Addy are founders of thriving tech companies debunking this long-standing myth and proving that women can do it too — and just as well!

To engage our ALX community and hear your thoughts on this topic, we ran a poll on Instagram. Drawing on insights and advice shared by girls and women in tech across the African continent, here are our Top 10 Do’s and Don’ts women can follow to conquer the African tech ecosystem.

DO your research

There are so many fields in tech and it can be quite overwhelming for us!

Tech is a vast field with hundreds of options to explore, and at first glance, it can be incredibly overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. All you need to do is to take some time to do thorough research and start fishing out the options that are best suited for you. Not every shoe will fit, and that’s okay. The beauty of tech lies in its diversity.

DO start building your network

On any path you decide to undertake, it is always better to walk the road with someone else. We cannot emphasise enough how crucial it is to find a support system to motivate you throughout your journey, especially in the tech world. Tech can feel lonely, isolated and downright scary, but the burden is significantly lighter with the right community. Building a network begins with putting yourself out there and communicating with others. Let people know who you are and what you’re interested in, and build loyalty by adding value consistently from there. Remember, your network is your net worth.

One of the biggest barriers women face in tech is finding people, especially women, who are as enthusiastic about their tech journey so that you can have people to go through the ups and downs with you.

DO find mentorship in your field of interest

Like a lighthouse, a mentor is a necessary guide for your journey through the murky waters of career development. An excellent mentor will help you navigate your newfound career interest and assist you in seeking opportunities. Besides that, you get to learn first-hand from a specialist who already has experience in the industry. Once you connect with someone who has trekked the path you endeavour to pursue, you’ll find comfort knowing that they can guide you to victory too.

DO think positively

A lack of confidence acts a gatekeeper to a woman’s success.

“I am not good enough” is not an option. Taking your first few steps to pursue tech is testament that you are more than capable. Remember that as human beings we are designed to adapt, learn and grow — all of which you will do as you embark on this new journey. Rid yourself of any toxic thoughts that tell you that you’re inferior to others. Walk into your field of choice with a can-do spirit and commitment to learning and you’ll set you up for success. Remain determined and expectant of favourable outcomes. It all starts with the mindset!

DO take advantage of resources and opportunities

The cost of training, resources and certification really deter women from pursuing tech.

Many women are unaware of the vast number of resources and opportunities available for their taking. There are several options to help you kickstart your career if you look in the right places. Our very own ALX is the perfect example to plug into. There are several free and subsidised courses and scholarships that aim to promote women’s participation in STEM. You can access motivationinspiration and knowledge right at your fingertips.

DON’T get stuck

The internet is a limitless resource, and what should be one hour of research could turn into a four-week exploration. Do not get caught up in the theory; simply start. Begin building your portfolio to help get your career off the ground. You will have more impact learning as you go, rather than catching yourself in a whirlwind of could-be’s and should-be’s. And again, if you hit a roadblock, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’d be surprised how many others can relate to your struggle and help you overcome it.

Women need to support women and create communities and mentorship to show how those who have gone ahead did it and pave the way for the incoming generation of women changemakers.

DON’T take failure as a setback

Understand that you cannot be perfect or work at optimal capacity 100% of the time. As much as you will progress, there will be times where you will slide back down, but that’s human and that’s okay. Failure is not a measure of your capability or lack thereof. It is simply a learning experience that redirects you to greater output, value and impact. The same goes for criticism — it’s a gift to fuel you to strive for success and gives you a chance to work on your blindspots and improve. It’s through failure that you come out stronger and wiser than ever before.

DON’T stereotype

Women constantly question themselves with, “ Are you sure you’re cut out for this? It’s a man’s world!”

This goes for two things: stereotyping gender and the African continent. You have to shed the idea that women are more inclined to behave or perform a certain way. It will only lead to boxing yourself in, which won’t get you very far. It is also very easy to fall into the negative belief in “African problems” and place yourself at the tail-end of the race. It’s true that Africa has its unique set of challenges that may impact your journey, but they are not a recipe for your doom and gloom. Familiarise yourself with the stories of African women in tech like Sarah Menker, “the woman who knows what the end of the world looks like”, Tarneem Saeed, “the entrepreneur at the forefront of Sudan’s economic renaissance”, and a host of others who are breaking boundaries on the continent, and know that if they made it, so can you. Like them, be a part of the solution, not the problem.

DON’T settle

Salary disparities are a major hindrance to women who want to explore tech.

As a woman, society will have many opinions about you — from how you should live your life to the career paths you should take. It is up to you to rise above any low expectations and prove yourself. Never settle for less than you deserve. Always negotiate a salary that reflects your experience and talent. Never get so comfortable that you do not allow yourself room to grow and flourish. Lastly, don’t allow anyone to dictate your pathway or patronise your values. You are your own entity and you are in charge of your career.

DON’T burn out

Being in a novel and fast-paced world can drain the energy out of you before you even realise it. Don’t get caught up in deadlines and blue screens without taking time out for yourself. Regularly recharge your battery and re-energise your spirit. You can do this by creating the habit of setting aside a short amount of time each day to unplug from your work and screen. And when possible, you can take longer vacations and retreats to reset completely. What’s important to remember is that this career journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace your workload and trust that little progress is better than no progress.

As you embark on your new and revolutionary journey, we urge you to remember who you are and how far you’ve come. Always remember to navigate your path with patience and kindness to yourself. Above all, stay true to your purpose and take up space where you belong.

Mauritian-born Kavi Ramburn is the Director of Talent Readiness at ALX. He is responsible for managing the world-class technical training programmes that provide young professionals throughout the African continent with in-demand skills for the careers that power the world. We spoke with Kavi to find out about the work that he’s driving at ALX, his thoughts on the importance of digital skills on the continent, and the crucial competencies that will be required in the future of work.

Can you share a bit about your background and career prior to joining ALX?

I was born in Mauritius, growing up in a family that was completely nonchalant about materialistic possessions. This gave me a minimalist approach to life and a strong love for nature.

My professional life prior to ALX was mostly in the non-profit sector — firstly with educational NGOs in Latin America, where I focused on the design of learning programmes — and later on with a global anti-human trafficking organisation working in Haiti, Ghana and India, where I focused on the assessment of community-based projects.

What drew you to work at ALX?

A little bit of a cliché: the mission and the people. In terms of the mission, I was strongly drawn by the possibility of working on the design and delivery of learning programmes that could positively impact the lives of millions of youth across the African continent. Being part of an organisation that operates at such a large scale and that has the ability to offer transformational experiences to an entire generation of young leaders is truly a privilege.

In terms of the people, I had heard from individuals in my network that ALG (African Leadership Group), and not only ALX, brought together incredibly passionate human beings and embedded them in an exciting work culture. I can now say that after having joined ALX over 3 years ago, I have been amazed by everyone’s drive to achieve excellence in every aspect of their work. Everyone at ALX seems to have the remarkable ability to get the most complicated things done in record time, but most importantly, everyone is able to do so with an incredible level of humility and collaboration.

As the Director for Talent Readiness, can you share what your role entails and what your team does?

The Talent Readiness department is in charge of designing and delivering ALX’s different learning tracks, such as our Data Analytics and Data Science programmes, our Cloud Computing programme, our Salesforce Administrator programme, and our Software Engineering programme. Our team’s interaction with our learners starts from the moment they have been accepted into one of our learning programmes. From that point, we start engaging with them by launching their learner journey and getting them onboarded and activated into the ALX community. Once onboarded, they have access to our whole community support ecosystem, which comprises our learner platform where they get to interact with their peers and get their questions answered from industry experts, as well as participate in carefully crafted community events.

Our learning model follows the 70–20–10 model: 10% formal coursework and training, 20% learning from their peers, mentors, and industry professionals, and finally 70% from learning by doing (i.e. undertaking practical projects by applying what they have learned).

At every point of the learning journey, our team strives to deliver magical and transformative learning, and community experiences that help drive engagement and long-term retention of our learners.

My role specifically is to lead the development of these programmes and ensure that our team is effectively delivering high-quality learning experiences for the thousands of customers that we serve. This entails managing operational and programme teams in the roll-out and implementation of digital cohort-based learning programmes. Additionally, I closely collaborate with other department leads on devising a common organisational strategy and operational plan to prepare our young professionals for dignified employment opportunities. Finally, I also manage partnerships with key institutional stakeholders with whom ALX partners to deliver these programmes at scale.

What are the crucial skills and competencies that you think young professionals in Africa will need to thrive in the future of work?

The most critical skill would likely be the ability and agility to learn. There is plenty of research showing that the key skills that were required 5–10 years ago across major industries are no longer relevant today, and that most jobs that will exist by 2030 have not even been invented yet. Such rapid changes mean that our young professionals will need to reinvent themselves multiple times throughout their careers to remain up to speed with the latest technological developments.

In addition, there are also numerous essential soft skills, such as the ability to problem-solve, effective communication, and collaboration, that are applicable across the majority of industries, and that recruiters often look for. These skills are the cornerstone of every tech programme at ALX, providing ALX graduates with the key proficiencies that will ensure long-term career success. Lastly, a strong foundation of core digital and tech competencies would undeniably be an essential piece that young professionals should continuously build upon to thrive in the future of work.

Why do you believe it’s important for young Africans to gain digital and technical skills?

A recent report by McKinsey mentioned that while the proportion of occupations that can be fully automated using current technology is less than 5%, within approximately 60% of all occupations, roughly a third of their activities can be automated using existing technology. As a result, most people entering the workforce will require a significant degree of digital and technical skills to simply navigate and perform in existing occupations.

While jobs requiring digital and technical skills are growing rapidly, the latest reports also indicate a significant unmet demand for such tech skills. For example, prior to the pandemic, the US alone had close to 1 million unfilled tech jobs. Moreover, the pandemic has dramatically accelerated digitally-enabled independent work, which is bound to keep growing over the next decades. By upskilling themselves, young Africans have the opportunity to fill that gap in the supply of tech roles.

What excites you about the work that you’re doing with your team?

Being at the forefront of the rapid transformations happening in the educational space. Our team operates the furthest away from rigid traditional learning models within archaic educational systems that are only accessible to the most privileged individuals. We work on delivering fast-paced, market-relevant, flexible, tech-enabled, community-driven hybrid learning that is highly accessible to millions of youth.

From your experience, what does it take for young people to fulfil their potential and embark successfully on their careers?

On an individual level, certain key mindsets, such as a “growth mindset”, can be extremely powerful in helping individuals transcend themselves. A growth mindset is not something innate, but can actually be learnt at any point in life. It helps establish an openness and love for learning, as well as the appropriate resilience to continuously improve oneself.

Beyond the individual level, especially in the markets that ALX serves, it is also critical to recognise that there are some heavy infrastructural barriers limiting young people’s ability to fulfil their potential. For example, a large number of young people we serve struggle to access reliable internet and tech tools that are essential in their learning journey and to launch their careers. These structural barriers have nothing to do with individual resilience and perseverance, and act as major limiting factors for youth on the continent. ALX constantly strives to find innovative solutions to such barriers, with the hope of increasing young people’s ability to fulfil their potential as much as possible.

What value does ALX hold for young professionals? What difference will it make to their lives?

Our young professionals who we interview or survey after they have gone through our learning programmes consistently share with us that ALX was a transformational experience for them, helping kickstart their career. Young people who participate in our learning programmes are equipped with essential mindsets as well as generalist and technical skills and tools that are pivotal in helping them find meaningful job opportunities and succeed in their new roles. Additionally, our young professionals also forge deep connections with their peers through our learning community, which provides them with a strong support ecosystem as they navigate the early stages of their careers. Moreover, once they have completed their respective learning programme at ALX, our young professionals have lifelong access to invaluable career opportunities through their Fellowship at The ROOM.
