About the Info Session

A new partnership between ALX Pathway and the School of Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET) at Patten University offers ALX Pathway learners a unique opportunity to pursue a fully accredited US degree. This collaboration provides a streamlined educational pathway with significant advantages for Pathway graduates. Last week, we were joined by Nate Brietling (Dr. B), Chief Academic Officer at Patten University, who shared this opportunity with our current Pathway cohort in a webinar presentation.

The webinar highlighted SET’s mission to empower individuals with tech skills and entrepreneurial mindsets, aligning perfectly with ALX’s goals. Patten University, located in Oakland, California, brings the spirit of Silicon Valley to its online degree programs. They believe innovation and technology should be accessible to everyone, and their career-focused degree programs are designed to meet industry needs and help place students in lucrative careers.

One of the biggest takeaways from this presentation is the recognition of ALX Pathway’s value for our learners. SET acknowledges the potential of Pathway learners and uses the program to identify highly motivated individuals. Completing ALX Pathway significantly increases your chances of admission to SET.

More importantly, successful ALX Pathway graduates are eligible for a sponsored placement tuition rate, drastically reducing the cost of their degree.

The partnership also ensures a seamless transition of credits. SET will review prior learning of any kind – including things like prior university credit or Pathway Foundations – and issue potential credits, allowing eligible learners to start ahead and reduce both time and cost to obtain their US degree.

That means, in theory, you could earn a Bachelor’s degree from SET at Patten University in just over three years, instead of 4! Plus, you’ll retain full access to the ALX ecosystem, including Hubs, community events, and networking opportunities, during your time at SET in order to maintain contact with your cohort, access consistent wifi and electricity, and be a part of the ALX community. You’ll even join the same graduating class as your Pathway peers, fostering continued collaboration.

SET offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Data Science and Software Engineering, both emphasizing entrepreneurial thinking and real-world problem-solving. Whether you dream of transforming data into innovation or building cutting-edge software, SET provides the skills and knowledge you need.

Patten University’s admission process is straightforward, with no application fees. They value your ALX Pathway completion as a sign of your commitment and potential.

This is a unique opportunity to elevate your education and career prospects. Imagine earning a US degree, accelerating your learning, and staying connected to the ALX community. Don’t miss out!

Ready to unlock your future? Sign up for ALX Pathway today and pave your way to a degree at SET!

Meet Adama, a 19-year-old high school graduate from Nigeria, brimming with ambition but unsure of how to navigate the complex landscape of higher education. Like many of her peers, Adama dreams of studying abroad, earning a degree that would not only set her on a path to a successful career but also empower her to contribute meaningfully to her community. However, the hurdles are immense—limited access to resources, high tuition costs, and a lack of guidance on how to apply to international universities.

Adama’s story is not unique; it reflects the aspirations and struggles of countless young Africans. But what if there was a way to break down these barriers and create a clear pathway to success?

Enter ALX Pathway, a transformative programme designed to bridge the gap between high school and global university education for African youth.

ALX Pathway is not just an educational programme; it’s a catalyst for personal and professional growth. Over eight months, participants like Adama gain critical skills, mentorship, and access to university partners that help them navigate the daunting process of international applications. Importantly, ALX Pathway offers young Africans a lifeline who might otherwise be excluded from the global education landscape due to socio-economic barriers.

Higher Education in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges

Higher education is a cornerstone of individual and societal progress, especially in a continent as young and dynamic as Africa. With 70% of the population under 30, Africa is brimming with potential for growth, innovation, and transformation. Access to higher education equips young Africans with the essential skills and knowledge needed to compete in the global job market, thereby supporting economic stability and encouraging social mobility.

However, despite its obvious benefits, the African youth face significant roadblocks in acessing quality higher education.

Enrolment rates remain low, particularly among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Financial barriers, gender disparities, and socio-economic inequalities all contribute to a system where higher education is skewed towards the privileged. This perpetuates a cycle of inequality, where those who need education the most are often the least likely to receive it.

ALX Pathway addresses these challenges head-on by creating access to global university partners, scholarships, and funding opportunities. Through Pathway, participants are not only prepared with crucial communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills but are also equipped with the confidence and knowledge needed to overcome the barriers to higher education.

Pathway Foundations: Preparing for University Application Success

Navigating the complex world of international university applications can be daunting, especially for students coming from Africa. Here, many lack access to necessary resources and guidance that could help them succeed in their university applications.

The first step of ALX Pathway is Pathway Foundations, an 8-month programme that equips participants with the skills and tools they need to succeed in university applications and beyond.

Let’s take a closer look at what Pathway Foundations is and why it is so important and impactful.

What is Pathway Foundations? Our Secret Sauce

Pathway Foundations starts with the Foundations of Entrepreneurship, which instills 8 essential meta-skills that are critical for academic and professional success. These skills include:

  1. Tech Skills: Participants learn essential digital and technical skills that are increasingly in demand in today’s global job market.
  2. Leading Self: This component focuses on self-leadership, helping students develop the discipline and resilience needed to succeed in both academic and professional settings.
  3. Leading Others: Participants are taught leadership skills that are essential for collaboration and teamwork in diverse professional and academic environments.
  4. Communicating for Impact: Effective communication is a cornerstone of success. This skill focuses on developing the ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively for different audiences.
  5. Critical Thinking: Participants learn how to analyse information, evaluate different perspectives, and make informed decisions.
  6. Quantitative Reasoning: This skill focuses on the ability to use mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems, a crucial competency in many fields.
  7. Managing Complex Tasks: Participants learn how to prioritize, plan, and execute tasks efficiently, which is essential for managing the demands of university life and beyond.
  8. Entrepreneurial Thinking: This skill encourages innovation and problem-solving, preparing students to navigate the challenges of the modern world with an entrepreneurial mindset.

These meta-skills are taught through a combination of virtual and in-person learning experiences, ensuring that participants are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of higher education. In addition to these skills, participants gain access to university representatives, mentors, and a peer community that provides ongoing support throughout their educational journey.

Other Important Skills Developed in Pathway Foundations

The other sessions included in Pathway Foundations are split between two terms. In term 1, you start with the Foundations of Entrepeneurship, and then finish with a College Algebra session. In the College Algebra refresher, participants focus on building essential algebraic skills that will prepare them for success in higher-level mathematics, software engineering, and data science disciplines.

Term 2 is split into 4 skill-building sessions: Business Finance, Introduction to Venture Creation, Introduction to Statistics, and Introduction to Software Engineering. In these sessions, participants will improve their skills to support their future university journey.

In the Business Finance session, participants engage with technical proficiency, critical thinking, and global awareness in order to navigate financial management challenges and contribute to ogranisational success.

During the Introduction to Venture Creation session, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the entrepeneurial journey and the critical skills required to launch and manage a successful business venture.

The Introduction to Statistics session introduces participants to the principles of descriptive and inferential statistics, providing them with a foundational understanding of concepts and techniques essential for data analysis across various disciplines.

In the Introduction to Software Engineering session, participants are introduced to the fundamental concepts of software engineering, covering key topics, tools, and programming languages essential to software engineering.

Additionally, after Term 1, participants will be encouraged and supported in applying to the university partners of their choice. During Pathway Foundations, participants will also have access to scholarship and funding partners, which will be explained below.

Why is Pathway Foundations Essential?

For students like Adama, Pathway Foundations is a crucial step in ensuring success in university applications and beyond. Many international universities have specific expectations and requirements that can be difficult to navigate without proper guidance. Pathway Foundations helps bridge this gap by providing a structured environment where participants can develop the skills and knowledge needed to meet these expectations.

Moreover, completing Pathway Foundations is a key criteria for gaining access to the vast ALX network of global university partners. These institutions recognize the value of the skills taught in Pathway Foundations and often fast-track applications from students who have completed the programme. This not only increases the chances of acceptance but also opens the door to exclusive pricing and scholarship opportunities.

Access University Partners, Scholarships, and Funding Opportunities

One of the most significant barriers to higher education for many African students is the cost. International degrees are prohibitively expensive, and without scholarships or financial aid, they are out of reach for most. ALX Pathway addresses this by partnering with universities that offer special pricing and scholarship opportunities for Pathway graduates.

A man with tied up hair sitting on a lawn working at his computer in university.

ALX University Partners

ALX has established partnerships with several prestigious universities including, Macalester College, Vanderbilt University, Lincoln University, African Leadership University (ALU), Patten University, Code University, and Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology. These institutions offer a range of degree programmes that are aligned with the needs of the modern workforce.

These partnerships are not just about providing access to education; they are about creating opportunities for students to thrive in a globalized world. By offering exclusive pricing and access, ALX university partners make it possible for students like Adama to achieve their educational goals without many of the barriers that typically come with international education.

Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

In addition to university partnerships, ALX Pathway also provides access to scholarships and funding opportunities.

The Swaniker Scholars Programme, for example, is a prestigious initiative designed to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity for exceptional young Africans. It supports their pursuit of world-class education by covering the cost of tuition, making higher education more accessible to students from all socio-economic backgrounds.

More information about scholarships and funding opportunities is made available as participants progress through Pathway Foundations. This holistic approach to support is what makes ALX Pathway stand out as a truly transformative programme.

Summary

By creating access to higher education, ALX Pathway is unlocking the potential of a generation of young Africans who have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to drive economic growth and social change across the continent. This is particularly important in a region where access to higher education has traditionally been limited to the privileged few.

For Adama and countless others like her, ALX Pathway provides the tools and support needed to overcome the barriers to higher education, enabling them to pursue their dreams and contribute to the development of their communities. By investing just $5 per month for eight months, participants can gain access to a world of opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach

Moreover, the skills taught in Pathway Foundations are not just applicable to higher education; they are essential for success in the modern, digital workforce. As the global economy continues to evolve, these skills will become increasingly valuable, giving Pathway graduates a competitive edge in the job market.

Introduction

Higher education is a cornerstone for individual and societal progress in Africa. With a burgeoning youth population, the continent holds immense potential for growth and development. However, access to quality higher education remains a significant challenge for many young Africans.

ALX Pathway is a pioneering initiative designed to address this gap. Throughout the first 8 months of Pathway Foundations, participants develop their professional skills and gain access to apply to any of our university partners. As part of ALX Pathway, participants will receive support in their application and also have access to special pricing and potential scholarship opportunities.

Pathway is more than just a stepping stone; it is a catalyst for personal and professional transformation. This article will contextualise ALX Pathway inside an African context to illustrate its importance as a programme that helps youth access global university opportunities.

Higher education in Africa

Higher education is pivotal for the development of African youth, offering various opportunities that can significantly impact their futures. With 70% of the continent’s population under 30, the potential for youth to drive economic growth, social cohesion, and lasting peace is immense.

Access to higher education equips young Africans with essential skills and knowledge, which helps them compete in the global job market, supports economic stability, and encourages social mobility.

Despite these opportunities, the continent faces significant challenges. One of those challenges is that higher education institutions in Africa struggle with low enrolment. ALX Pathway addresses challenges like these by providing young Africans with access to global university partners, scholarships, and funding opportunities. During Pathway, participants are prepared with crucial communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills to support their enrollment into university partners. Overall, ALX Pathway supports the overall mission of creating access to higher education and empowering African youth to transform their futures.

Challenges to higher education in Africa

Access to higher education in Africa faces significant challenges for a few reasons. In socio-economic terms, students from wealthier and more educated families have a higher likelihood of enrollment in higher education institutions. The substantial fees and opportunity cost of higher education create financial barriers, too, that disproportionately affect students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, limiting their access and perpetuating inequality. University systems in Africa often lack comprehensive data on the socio-economic backgrounds of their students, making it difficult to address these disparities effectively.

Despite the rapid expansion of higher education in sub-Saharan Africa, where enrolment numbers have increased dramatically, access remains skewed towards the privileged. Students from upper middle-class backgrounds and those whose parents have post-secondary qualifications are overrepresented in higher education institutions. This trend mirrors the social inequalities observed in the former colonial powers, the UK and France, where socio-economic background heavily influences educational attainment.

Gender disparities further complicate access to higher education, with men more likely than women to complete a degree programme. While some initiatives in countries like South Africa and Uganda aim to improve diversity and access, the benefits often remain confined to those already privileged.

The potential for digital education to effectively address these issues for all people, not just the privileged, is immense, as it can increase access to higher education by bridging the digital gap and promoting access to inclusive education through distance learning.

The role of international education organisations

The role of international education organisations in facilitating access to higher education for African students is pivotal – yet fraught with barriers. Historically, higher education has been recognized as crucial for Africa’s development, addressing the need for skilled professionals and building economic growth.

While strides have been made in expanding primary and secondary education across the continent, the focus has now shifted to enhancing tertiary education to prepare African youth for a globalised job market.

Efforts by organisations and schools across Africa, such as Bridge2Rwanda and African Leadership Academy, underscore the importance of robust international partnerships in supporting students’ educational journeys. These initiatives not only provide financial support but also offer mentorship and guidance crucial for navigating the complex challenges faced by African youth of higher education admissions abroad.

Moving forward, concerted efforts are needed to expand scholarship opportunities, improve information dissemination, and streamline visa processes to ensure equitable access to quality higher education for all African students.

This is exactly what ALX Pathway intends to do.

Creating Access to Higher Education for African Youth

Access to higher education in Africa is a gateway to brighter futures and greater opportunities for personal and collective growth. Despite historical challenges, there is growing momentum to expand access and enhance the relevance of higher education across the continent.

At ALX Africa, we’re committed to empowering a new generation of agile digital leaders, equipping them with the skills and networks needed to thrive in today’s dynamic global landscape. By 2030, our goal is to impact 2 million African youths, helping them secure meaningful and sustainable careers that contribute to their communities’ prosperity. Higher education plays a crucial role in meeting this goal and to the overall development of the African continent.

Our Mission

Our mission at ALX Africa is clear: to unlock the potential of Africa by nurturing a generation of adaptable leaders who are ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. Through tailored programs and partnerships, we strive to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, empowering young Africans to build impactful careers and drive positive change in their communities.

We believe that by creating a supportive career and talent development ecosystem, we can build pathways to success that transcend borders and empower individuals to reach their full potential.

Participating universities in ALX Pathway play a crucial role in this mission by promoting regional specialisation and strengthening capacities to deliver quality training and career acceleration for participants.

Access to education drives societal success

Access to education is a fundamental driver of personal and societal success, particularly in Africa, where educational opportunities are crucial for economic and social development. Higher education empowers individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the job market and contribute to their communities. As more African countries prioritise higher education, new universities and innovative approaches to learning are emerging, creating a vibrant and dynamic educational landscape.

This shift is ushering in a generation of skilled professionals ready to tackle the continent’s unique challenges and seize its numerous opportunities – especially in the digital age.

The relevance and impact of higher education in Africa are becoming increasingly evident. Institutions are focusing on aligning educational programs with local and global market demands, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the workforce of the future. This alignment is not only enhancing employment prospects for graduates but also driving economic growth and development across the continent. By continuing to invest in and innovate within the higher education sector, Africa is building a brighter future, where education serves as a catalyst for success and sustainable development.

Quality education in these institutions not only equips learners with relevant skills and competencies but also plays a crucial role in economic development, innovation, and addressing various challenges such as digital gaps and humanitarian crises.
